With the monsoons here, Inbandra asked Horticulture expert and plant lover Anusha Babbar to tell us which plants are perfect to grow in this season. These are easy to care for and can be grown on your balcony or terrace.
Zephyranthes Lily: The delicate flowers of this lily come in shades of yellow, white, purple and pink only during the monsoon season. Best effect when grown in clusters.
Fireball Lily: As the name suggest the flower of this lily looks like a ball of fire and grows well individually in potted plants. The contrast of the red flower and bright green leaves is very attractive.
Oncidium orchids: These lovely orchids grow well in the humidity of the monsoons as most orchids have aerial roots and get their nutrients from the surrounding atmosphere and not soil.
Bromeliads: They love moisture and have attractive leaves in rosette formation from which vibrant flowers bloom in shades ranging form red, oranges, blues and purples.
How to maintain your plants during the rains;
1. Fertilize all plants once a month with organic fertilizer either in liquid or solid form.
2. If plants are infested, spray either contact or systemic insecticide after the rains passes or else of no use
3. Clean regularly dead leaves and flowers.
4. While watering keep in mind soil should always be evenly moist from top to bottom and not soggy
5. A good amount of sunlight is essential for most plants that flower.
