Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day

Directed by: Bharat Nalluri, Starring: Frances McDormand and Amy Adams

Just like Mrs. Henderson Presents and Being Julia, this period comedy brings wit and style to its depiction of 1930s London. Based on Winifred Watson’s novel, Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, the film begins with the title character, a frumpy governess, being turned away from her employment agency. After losing her job prospects and all her earthly possessions in a mishap, Guinevere Pettigrew isn’t sure where her next meal will come from. But some ingeuinty leads her to the door of aspiring actress Delysia Lafosse, a woman who needs a social secretary to juggle her three men. Like other feather-light films, it may seem a bit out of place on the big-screen, but this is the first English movie release in two weeks. Long queues expected.

Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo

America’s favorite pothead pals, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn), return with a sequel that skewers everything from racial prejudice to the president of the United States. The film picks up shortly after the first film, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, as the boys plan a trip to the Mecca of Marijuana: Amsterdam. The two soon find themselves in hot water when Kumar sneaks a bong onto the flight and is mistaken for a bomb-wielding terrorist. The two then land in the hottest water of all: Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. When they escape back to the US, they set out to get help from Harold’s politically connected former classmate, who is also marrying the girl that Kumar let get away. Comic mayhem ensues and everything politically incorrect from violence, racism, incest, sex, drugs, gross-out humour (and even Neil Patrick Harris) is featured.

The Barbarian Invasions

Directed by: Denys Arcand, Starring: Rémy Girard and Stéphane Rousseau

The Barbarian Invasions (winner of a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar) is a movie about a man who dies about as pleasantly as it’s possible to imagine. A profoundly funny film, the sequel to ‘The Decline Of The American Empire’ is full of smart, sexy dialogue. The film focuses on Remy’s battle with terminal cancer, and his estranged son’s efforts to make his dying father more comfortable in his last days. During his last days, Remy and his friends travel to the cottage of the first film, and discuss politics, and past sexual and intellectual exploits. And since the film is more about exploring characters than plot, it isn’t adjoined to ‘Decline’, and can be enjoyed as on its own

Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Directed By: Rob Cohen, Starring: Brendan Fraser and Jet Li

The mummy of all movie franchises is back. After a six-year hiatus, Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell in the highly-anticipated The Mummy: Tomb Of the Dragon Emperor. This time, O’Connell travels to China to combat the resurrected Han Emperor. He is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah). The film has so far received negative reviews. But then again, critical acclaim isn’t what’s prompting the producers – who’ve made a whole lot of money (we’re just jealous) – to keep making these movies in the first place.

Prom Night

Directed by: Nelson McCormick, Starring: Brittany Snow and Scott Porter

Another slasher movie by a director you’ve never heard of but with a suspiciously familiar script, this film is about many college students getting killed on prom night. And this isn’t the first time this has happened. Many students were brutally murdered on prom night way back in 1980 when Jamie Lee Curtis, Leslie Nielsen and Casey Stevens stupidly fell for their killer’s traps (plenty of emphasis on stupidly). This movie is supposed to be stupider. To combine the words of two critics, “Prom Night offers fewer scares than the elimination episodes of Dancing With the Stars” and “is essentially “The OC with a body count.”

Showing at: Suburbia (10am)

Be Kind Rewind

Michael Gondry is back. Be Kind Rewind is a hilarious look at two men who have to remake movies in a video rental shop after all the tapes are accidentally erased.

Set in Passaic, a small town in the US, this film also manages to recreate the spirit that smaller towns share. Gondry has also actually used the townspeople as extras, which adds  to the feel of the film.

Mos Def and Jack Black are quite hilarious and their awkward chemistry is perfect. Not really everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are up for a night in and are looking for something offbeat, you will be in good company.
